Amelia Benjamin
Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology
Amelia Benjamin is an ST3 Specialty Registrar in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, working in the East of England. She graduated in 2018 and has previously worked in hospitals in London. Amelia has a particular interest in antimicrobial resistance and the development of effective antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) practices.
She is excited for this opportunity to learn from others who have both a different and greater wealth of experience, and to work in a partnership to develop strategies to reduce healthcare inequality.
Evan Edmond
Neurology
Evan is an ST5 Neurology registrar in the East of England. He trained and completed a PhD at the University of Oxford before moving to the East of England. His research work involved working with patients with motor neurone disease (MND) and people carrying high-risk genes for MND to find early disease biomarkers. He is particularly interested in contributing to the global challenge in early diagnosis and treatment of neurodegeneration. He is particularly excited to collaborate with teams at the University of Cape Town, South Africa to learn and contribute to this challenge.
Frances Arnold
Emergency & Pre-Hospital Medicine
Fran is currently an ST6 Emergency Medicine and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine dual trainee based at Addenbrookes and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, on secondment from South London. After working overseas for 18 months, Fran completed the Diploma in Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine last year and inspired by the incredible people she met through the programme, decided to drive her career to incorporate global health and humanitarian work. Particular areas of interest to Fran are health inequality, access to critical care and trauma care provision around the world. Fran is very honoured to have been selected for a Cambridge Global Health Fellowship and is looking forward to using this platform to raise awareness for ongoing global health issues as well as hopefully inspiring others to also get involved.
Philip Adedokun
Paediatrics
Philip Adedokun is an ST4 East of England Paediatric Trainee. He obtained his MB;BS (2015) degree from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria. His experience working with the World Health Organization (WHO) where he collaborated with other local and international organisations to ensure Polio eradication and improve vaccine uptake practices for vaccine preventable diseases in Nigeria led to his interest in seeking paediatric postgraduate training. He is a member of the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health (MRCPCH), Child Health East of England Research Initiative (CHEERI) communications/email lead, Paediatric Undergraduate Regional Educator (PURE) mentor, Cambridge Global Health Fellow, Associate Fellow of the Advance HE, East of England representative for paediatric IMG doctors and a Cambridge University medical student supervisor. He has interest in developing his global health and research skills and plans to sub-specialise in paediatric neurology.
Ugonna Nwankpa
Public Health
Ugonna is an ST3 Public Health Registrar in the East of England. She has completed placements in local authority and health protection teams regionally. She developed a passion for global health during medical school, particularly in the areas of health inequalities and marginalised communities. During this time, she represented medical students internationally, conceptualising and delivering training workshops worldwide as well as collaborating with international organisations such as the WHO and UN at high level advocacy events. Since joining Public Health training, she has completed a MPhil at the University of Cambridge in Population Studies and taken up a national leadership role in promoting global partnerships amongst Public Health Registrars. She is excited to have the opportunity to undertake a CGHP fellowship and is looking forward to working on the Kakamega Partnership to tackle one of the most pertinent Public Health issues, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
Abigail Gallagher
Anaesthetics
Abigail Gallagher is an CT3 anaesthetic trainee at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. She completed her medical degree at the University of East Anglia, before undertaking foundation training in North West London. She has fostered a keen interest in global health throughout her career and has spent time working in both New Zealand and Panama. During medical school, Abigail intercalated at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where she undertook an MSc in Reproductive and Sexual Health Research. Her specific project was the impact of malaria on maternal health outcomes. She has a particular interest in medical education and simulation and is currently completing a PG Certificate in Clinical Education. Abigail is really looking forward to her year as a Global Health Fellow and hopes to gain valuable experience working in collaboration with overseas colleagues. She is going to be participating in the SCALE partnership with Uganda and hopes to contribute towards setting up a virtual simulation programme.
Kati Lestak
Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Kati is an ST4 in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has a life passion for achieving global equity in maternal and gynaecological health. She has previously had experience in the King’s Somaliland partnership, Medsin-UK (now Students for Global Health) and has a BSc in Global Health from King’s College London with a special interest in the ethics of evolving new technologies within aid spheres. She is passionate about fostering bilateral learning through health partnerships and will be working with the Kenyan team to help deliver projects improving maternal outcomes.
Esha Khanderia
Oncoplastic surgery
Esha is an ST8 Specialty Registrar in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in the East of England. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Global Healthcare Leadership and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Cambridge. Esha is a keen advocate for improving breast cancer care and is interested in addressing global disparities that exist in provision of services. During her fellowship, she will be working with the Association of Breast Surgeons UK in Zimbabwe and the Cambridge Uganda Health Partnership to improve breast cancer care through early detection, diagnosis and education.
Nouran Elbarbary
Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Nouran Elbarbary is an East of England ST3 in Obstetrics and Gynaecology currently undertaking research. Her interest in global health comes from a position that calls for equality in accessing healthcare for all. Nouran has had the opportunity to engage with WHO-funded programmes supporting health of mothers and children in Egypt, as well as through voluntary work with various international organisations in Oman and Syria. Her focus is on providing and improving training of healthcare professionals, as a means to positively impact their patients and communities. Through her Global Health Fellowship, Nouran will be joining an ongoing project in Uganda, aimed at improving maternal health and tackling mortality levels.
Mariam Karimi
Anaesthetics
Mariam is an ST7 anaesthetic trainee in the East of England, with a subspecialty interest in paediatrics and critical care transport. Her career has been cultivated around a commitment to global health and equity, through various activities starting from medical school. During her Lifebox fellowship in Tanzania as an anaesthetist, she played a key role in designing and delivering a curriculum for student nurse anaesthetists, gained clinical exposure, and supported quality improvement projects. She is on the Médecins Sans Frontières emergency register, and has completed the 10-month Global Heath and Humanitarian course, earning the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Mariam is immensely looking forward to deepening her understanding of the logistics of healthcare delivery, nurturing partnerships, and collaborating with a wider non-medical multidisciplinary team during her fellowship with Cambridge Global Health Partnerships.
